This block set is very unique and unexpected. The pieces are a rough plastic, and make a clicking sound when you shake them, which I think is the magnets. The magnetic part is strong enough to hold them together but not so much to make them hard to pull apart. 6 year old played with them nonstop for 3 hours, building multiple different combinations. She came up with various ways to place them to make stairs, a house, beds, etc. They seem to be well made and the colors are bright. In general I think its a great gift for pre-k children and older. I think the price point is a bit high for the number of pieces, and it could use more variety and lighted pieces. I think the age of 3+ is too young, the corners are sharp and I think a toddler could hurt themselves if they put it in their mouth as theyre small enough to fit. They did immediately capture her attention and keep it, which is important.
